The international Global Genes Compassionate Program has opened its doors once again, offering a remarkable opportunity for both medical students and individuals or families affected by rare diseases like complex lymphatic anomalies. This year, the program is excited to partner with the Ross University School of Medicine, creating a unique platform for learning, advocacy, and collaboration.

The Importance of the Program

Globally, an estimated 400 million people—about 3.5% to 5.9% of the population—are living with a rare medical condition. These conditions often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, leaving patients and their families to navigate a challenging and complex healthcare system. The RARE Compassion Program aims to bridge this gap by fostering greater understanding and empathy among future healthcare providers.

Opportunities for Individuals and Families

Individuals and families affected by rare diseases can benefit from the program by:

  • Sharing Their Story: An opportunity to influence the next generation of healthcare professionals by sharing personal experiences.
  • Participating in Creative Workshops: Involvement in the RAREly Told Stories Filmmaking Workshop, which helps bring their stories to a broader audience.
  • Networking with Experts: The chance to collaborate with professionals and advocates who are leading the way in rare disease research and care.
  • Attending Major Events: Access to Global Genes' flagship events, such as the Health Equity Forum and Rare Advocacy Summit, to further their advocacy efforts.

Opportunities for Medical Students

For medical students, the RARE Compassion Program offers:

  • Building Compassion: The chance to engage in 1:1 interactions with individuals and families living with rare diagnoses, gaining invaluable insights into their unique challenges.
  • Expanding Networks: Opportunities to connect with professionals and advocates dedicated to the rare disease community.
  • Deepening Knowledge: Access to Global Genes events, such as the Health Equity Forum and Rare Advocacy Summit, where the latest developments in the field are discussed.
  • Advancing Careers: Eligibility to apply for the David R. Cox Scholarship, supporting students committed to rare disease advocacy.
