LGDA's Response to Proposed NIH Reforms

The Lymphangiomatosis and Gorham's Disease Alliance (LGDA), alongside other organizations, recently signed a letter responding to proposed reforms for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is a cornerstone of medical research in the U.S., supporting life-saving research across numerous specialized institutes. The coalition expressed concern over potential changes to the NIH's structure, particularly the consolidation of its 27 Institutes and Centers into 15. This move could dilute the specialized research focus crucial for advancing targeted health innovations, such as the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), which has led groundbreaking efforts in oral health.

The letter emphasized the importance of maintaining distinct institutes dedicated to specific health priorities, which allows for in-depth research and training in specialized fields. Additionally, the coalition supported reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and leadership within the NIH but urged that any changes be evidence-based and thoroughly vetted. The coalition also highlighted concerns about funding reforms that could negatively impact research institutions by capping indirect costs, potentially hindering scientific progress.

The LGDA and its partners are committed to ensuring that the NIH continues to lead in medical innovation while preserving its specialized research capabilities and supporting the next generation of scientists.
